Stricter penalities in place from 2017
The government have made changes to legislation to ensure that penalities given to drivers caught using their phones behind the wheel increase in the first half of 2017.
• A report by the RAC found that the number of people who admit to using their phone behind the wheel has more than tripled since 2014
• Government officials are hoping that the new legislation will make using a phone at the wheel a socially unacceptable habit, such as drink driving
• Since 2007 over 58,000 mobile phone convictions (CU80s) amongst drivers
• Penalty points are set to double from three to six points in 2017, with fines also increasing from £100 to £200.
